Yan Zhenqing's "Manuscript of Eulogy for My Nephew" - A Reproduction of a Tang Dynasty Calligraphy Masterpiece
The full title of this work is Manuscript of Eulogy for My Nephew, Ji Ming, Presented with the Title of Zanshan Dafu, commonly referred to as Eulogy for My Nephew or Draft of Eulogy for My Nephew. It was written by the renowned Tang Dynasty calligrapher Yan Zhenqing on the 3rd day of the 9th lunar month in the first year of the Qianyuan era (October 9, 758). Widely celebrated as "the finest extant example of Yan's calligraphy" and "the second greatest running script in the world," the original manuscript is now housed in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Alongside Wang Xizhi's Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection and Su Dongpo's Cold Food Observance, Yan Zhenqing's Manuscript of Eulogy for My Nephew is revered as one of the "Three Great Running Script Masterpieces of All Time."
This manuscript is a draft Yan Zhenqing composed in memory of his nephew, Ji Ming, who tragically died during the An Lushan Rebellion. Written in a state of profound grief and indignation, the calligraphy reflects Yan's turbulent emotions. As his mind was too agitated to remain calm, the characters fluctuate with his mood, resulting in numerous corrections and spontaneous brushstrokes throughout the text. Unconcerned with the refinement of technique or the perfection of form, the writing is a raw and heartfelt outpouring of his spirit and years of practiced skill. This manuscript is not only a significant historical document but also one of the most valuable artistic treasures in Chinese calligraphy, embodying both emotional depth and technical mastery.
This reproduction captures the essence of the original, making it an exceptional piece for collectors and enthusiasts of classical Chinese calligraphy. It offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of history, showcasing the profound beauty and emotional power of Yan Zhenqing's artistry. Perfect for those who appreciate the intersection of art, history, and human emotion, this work brings the legacy of one of China's greatest calligraphers into your home.
