Wu Hong (1615–1680), also known as Wu Yuan or by his courtesy name Yuandu, and pseudonyms Zhushi and Xijiang Waishi, was a native of Jinxi, Jiangxi, who later settled in Jiangning (modern-day Nanjing). From a young age, he showed a passion for painting, developing a unique style. In 1653, he traveled north of the Yellow River and visited Xueyuan, which profoundly influenced his artistic approach, leading to a more expansive and free-spirited technique. His works often drew inspiration from natural landscapes and the idyllic utopia of the Peach Blossom Spring, characterized by a balanced composition of density and openness, exuding a majestic and broad atmosphere. Alongside Gong Xian, Gao Cen, Fan Qi, Zou Zhe, Ye Xin, Hu Zao, and Xie Sun, he was recognized as one of the "Eight Masters of Jinling." Among them, Wu Hong's style was the most unrestrained and imaginative, blending boldness with intricate details, and his works are filled with a vivid sense of life. He occasionally painted bamboo and rocks, showcasing a masterful use of ink.

"Visiting Friends by the Riverside Pavilion" is a testament to Wu Hong's refined brushwork and his ability to capture the serene beauty of Jiangnan's autumn water towns. The painting employs a "level-distance" composition, creating a sense of vastness while maintaining clear layers. The skillful use of ink washes and light coloring results in a harmonious and refreshing palette, embodying the classic "light crimson" style. The scene is both tranquil and lively, with meticulous attention to detail that brings the landscape to life.

This reproduction faithfully captures the essence of Wu Hong's original, making it a treasured piece for collectors and admirers of classical Chinese art. It offers a glimpse into the poetic and introspective style of the Ming-Qing transition period, perfect for those who appreciate the harmony of nature and the artistry of ink wash techniques.
